Semi-naked wedding cakes continue to be on-trend for wedding cakes in 2020. They are beautifully versatile and can be flamboyant or rustic depending upon the wedding setting. So for me they have to be one of my favourite cakes to make as I really love playing with different flavour combinations and you can see all of the effort that goes into baking when a cake is naked/semi naked there is no hiding it!
I made this beautiful three tier semi naked wedding cake recently for a wedding at Houchins wedding venue. A three tier beautiful cake each with a different flavour the bottom tier was Strawberry and Passionfruit, the middle tier was Raspberry and white chocolate and the top tier was ginger and lemon beautiful luxurious flavours that really do stand out. These were adorned with a semi naked covering of buttercream and adorned with roses, provided by the Felicity Wiggins at Amega Fleur. The gentle colour palette of creams, peaches and pinks along with the beautiful green foliage suited the bright and airy venue perfectly.
Sarah, the bride had chosen hybrid tea roses, David Austin roses, lisianthus and Rosemary foliage for the cake. The David Austin roses were my favourite with their pretty centres and breath-taking fragrance paired with the Rosemary foliage they adorned the cake beautifully. I do love a rose!
I received a message shortly after the wedding from Sarah with this complimentary testimonial: "thank you for our cake We absolutely loved it! It looked stunning and tasted delicious all the guests kept saying how nice it was. We served it at the drinks reception."
How to decide upon your luxury wedding cake
As wedding season is in full swing I wanted to take time a little time out to bring future brides some information about how to choose their luxury wedding cake.
The first thing to do when considering your luxury wedding cake is choosing your wedding cake designer. As a Cake designer based in Essex catering for Essex and Suffolk I pride myself on designing stylish and luxurious wedding cakes that are the centre piece of any occasion however their is an immense amount of expertise within the wedding cake industry so look for a cake designer who you feel understands you as a couple and how you want your wedding cake to fit within your wedding day. Ensure that you view portfolio's of their work, read previous clients testimonials and look at the current venues that they work with and ask yourself is the quality of work the standard that you want for your wedding.
Choosing flavours and sizes
A row of tiered single cakes or a stacked cake? when it comes to choosing your luxury wedding cake the sky really is the limit there are no clear cut rules to follow but here are some helpful suggestions for you that can help you to decide.
The first thing to consider is definitely the amount of guests that you are inviting to your wedding as more guests = more portions of cake although you don't only have to serve only cake a desert table can definitely bring you a luxurious feel.
if your wedding venue is rustic you might want to consider an array of luxurious 1 tier cakes or if you have chosen a more classic venue with high ceilings and a sweeping staircase then a tall wedding cake would compliment the room beautifully.
ok so lets talk flavours when you think luxury do you think vanilla? or fruit cake? No the luxurious cakes are the ones with the most enticing and mouth watering combinations think strawberry and passionfruit, raspberry and amaretto, Coconut and lime. (all of these flavours you can find on our menu) Flavours like these ensure that not only will your cake look elegant and luxurious but the flavours of your cake will be just as elegant.
So after having chosen your wedding cake designer, decided upon your sizes and flavours next is the design of your cake luxurious wedding cakes tend to focus on textures, clean lines, flawless finishing and expert detailing. Handmade sugar flowers are possible one of the most luxurious elements of detailing that you can add to a cake along with ruffles, and edible silver and gold leaf.
Along with my carved occasion cakes Sugar craft flowers have become a part of my signature wedding style. I can offer a variety of sugarcraft flowers my favourite (and most popular being roses of all varieties)
The final item to consider is dressing your wedding cake table and or desert table. think about the cake stands, crockery, serving ware, the linen all of these can make your wedding cake more luxurious.
I do hope that this blog has helped to guide you in the right direction. Wedding cakes are so vast and offer so many different styles but if it is a luxurious wedding cake that you are after then its best to consider all your options carefully. I started summers little bakery in 2009 baking cakes and cupcakes for local clients and farmers markets, this was not long after being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and the Dr advised me to find a hobby to focus on. I had always loved baking as a child with my nan so I felt that this would be a great place to start it wasn’t long until I found my love of sugarcraft.
I spent all my spare time recreating flowers and different sugarcraft characters and what I found was hours could go by where I had been sat at my table submerged in all these different fondant figures.
I had found my passion and as the cakes got taller and the detailing more intricate, I found myself creating cakes for clients further afield and producing wedding cakes for some of the most beautiful venues in Essex.
I now only bake a handful of cakes for occasions and focus most of my time on creating wedding cakes and cakes for special events.
